Advancing Naturalization for Tech Professionals in Cyprus: Simplifying Procedures

The House of Representatives in Cyprus has recently passed a pivotal amendment to the Civil Registry Law. This marks a significant change in Cyprus’ naturalization policy, particularly benefiting those in the ‘research and innovation’ sector. This move is part of Cyprus’ plan to position itself as a prime global tech hub and a desirable locale for international business.

The updated naturalization criteria in Cyprus are as follows:

Adjusted General Requirements

Applicants must have resided legally in Cyprus for a year prior to their application, with allowable absences not exceeding 90 days. Moreover, a legal stay in Cyprus for at least seven years within the last decade is required, with similar provisions for absences. Applicants must maintain a clean criminal record, demonstrate good character, financial independence, and have adequate living conditions. Proficiency in Greek at the B1 level and knowledge of Cypriot culture and politics are also necessary, along with an intention to continue residing in Cyprus.

Special Conditions for Technology Sector Professionals

For highly skilled tech professionals, the residency requirement is more lenient. The standard seven-year stay is reduced to four years for those with A2 level Greek proficiency and three years for B1 level. An important addition for ‘research and innovation’ professionals is that their spouses and civil partners can also apply for citizenship under the same criteria. This extends to minor and dependent adult children, making the transition to full Cypriot citizenship smoother for the entire family. Applications from tech experts are expedited, with a decision promised within eight months, subject to a fee.

These legislative amendments firmly establish Cyprus as an attractive destination for leading talents in technology and business. The law is designed to attract skilled professionals while providing an inclusive pathway to citizenship, emphasizing successful social integration.
