Non-EU Immigration to Cyprus
Non-EU Immigrants include people seeking asylum or migrating due to the economy. The European Commission defines an “immigrant” as anyone from a non-EU country who wants to establish their own usual residence in an EY country for about 12 months.
The immigration process is subjected to certain restrictive regulations and laws, which borders on issuing entry, work, and residence permits for the immigrants. These laws may be amended, adjusted, or changed as necessary. The most basic of this regulation is that every non-EU citizen who seeks to establish a residence in Cyprus must apply for a visa.

Types of Visas and Permits
A short-stay visa is a mandatory requirement for Individuals visiting Cyprus for vacation or business, provided such stay will not exceed three months. The visa comes as a single-entry or multiple-entry short-stay visa. For instance, an individual who wants to travel to Cyprus regularly for business or other reasons may apply for a 1-year multiple-entry visa. However, their total stay within that one year may not be longer than three months.
A special temporary permit is a mandatory requirement for a non-EU citizen looking to stay in Cyprus long-term without taking up employment. A temporary residence permit or the Pink Slip is usually valid for a period of 1-2 years, although there is an option to extend for an extra 1–2-year period, if necessary.
There are three categories of Temporary Residence Permits:
- Visitor visa
- Student visa
- Employment visa
Any non-EU national looking to take up employment at a Cyprus company or become self-employed is required to get an immigration permit. The same applies to non-EU immigrants with a secure annual income at their disposal, eliminating the need for employment, business venture, or profession. However, such an individual must meet the specific requirements of their category, as defined by the Cyprus legislation and immigration regulations.
Any non-EU family member of non-EU citizens or non-EU family members of EU citizens looking to stay in the country permanently must apply for a Permanent Residence Permit.
