Immigration Regulations for UK Nationals in Cyprus

As of January 1, 2021, the United Kingdom is no longer an EU member country. Consequently, UK nationals who do not possess Yellow Slips (MEU1, MEU2, MEU3) or residence documents (MUKW1, MUKW2, MUKW3) must adhere to immigration rules when traveling to Cyprus. Here are the latest details regarding the revised immigration regulations for UK nationals in Cyprus:

Visa-Free Entry: UK nationals can legally enter and stay in Cyprus without a visa for a maximum of 90 days. Their passports will be stamped during entry and exit border checks.

Extending Stay: Should UK nationals wish to prolong their stay in Cyprus beyond 90 days, they have the option to apply for either temporary residency or permanent residency, which is available to non-EU nationals.

Temporary Residence (Pink Slip): Non-EU nationals who visit Cyprus for long-term purposes without employment rights can apply for a temporary residence permit commonly known as a “Pink Slip.” This permit allows non-EU nationals to extend their stay in Cyprus beyond 90 days. It is essential to apply before their visas expire. The Pink Slip is valid for one year and can be renewed annually. However, the permit will be canceled if the holder remains outside of Cyprus continuously for more than 3 months.

Application Process: When applying for a Pink Slip, both the applicant and their dependent spouse and minor children must be physically present at the Migration Department. This is necessary to provide their biometric features (fingerprints and photographs) and sign the required documents prior to submitting the temporary residence applications.

Permanent Residence: Non-EU nationals and their family members who intend to relocate permanently to Cyprus can apply for permanent residency under various categories offered to non-EU nationals. These categories, outlined in the Aliens and Immigration Regulations, grant immigration permits for an unlimited duration to non-EU nationals who meet specific requirements:

Category A: Persons who intend to work as self-employed in agriculture, cattle breeding, bird breeding, or fish culture in the Republic.

Category B: Persons who intend to work as self-employed in mining enterprises in the Republic.

Category C: Persons who intend to work as self-employed in a trade or profession in the Republic.

Category D: Persons who intend to work as self-employed in a profession or science in the Republic.

Category E: Persons who have been offered permanent employment in the country without creating undue local competition.

Category F: Also known as the “Slow Track” permanent residency, suitable for non-EU nationals with a secure and regular annual income sufficient for a decent living in Cyprus without engaging in any business, trade, or profession.

Each application is carefully examined by the Immigration Control Board, and final approval is granted by the Minister of the Interior. The examination and processing of applications typically take around 12-18 months. If applicants wish to remain in Cyprus during the examination period, they must apply for a temporary residence permit.

Work Permits: Non-EU nationals desiring to work in Cyprus can apply for residency permits available to non-EU nationals who wish to reside and work in the country. Eligible individuals can apply for a temporary residence and employment permit as an employee of existing or new companies with foreign interests registered in Cyprus, as long as a majority of the company’s shares are owned by third-country nationals. Companies that have joined the Fast-Track Business Activation Mechanism are also eligible. Furthermore, non-EU nationals can be employed by Cypriot companies and obtain a work permit, subject to specific requirements. Applications for work permits are submitted to the District Labour Offices, which verify the fulfillment of employment criteria and the lack of adequately qualified Cypriot or European citizens.

It is crucial for UK nationals to acquaint themselves with the updated immigration rules and adhere to the appropriate procedures when visiting or relocating to Cyprus. Seeking professional advice and guidance can facilitate a smooth and successful application process.
